WEYLANDTS GETS INTO THE SPIRIT OF 2010 WITH ITS OWN COLLECTION OF WORLD CUPS
Thursday 24th JuneThis month Weylandts celebrates the World Cup with a signature range of vases and vessels that have travelled from across the globe to reach our shores.
Owner and CEO of Weylandts, Chris Weylandt, explains that the move towards reclaiming traditional hand skills and natural materials is a noteable trend for 2010. This collection represents time-honoured traditions and cultures from all over the world – from Thailand and Spain, to Burundi and the Ukraine.”
“While all of the vessels in the collection have been sourced by hand from different regions, the common thread that connects each of these remarkable pieces is the passion with which they have been created, and the balance of form and function which they embody,” says Weylandt.
The new World Cups collection at Weylandts features an array of hand-made vessels created from natural products, ranging from delicate mouth-blown and recycled glassware, to earthy clay pots and carefully carved stone and wood. Some of these pieces were integral parts of everyday life and traditional rituals, which have now been reinvented as show pieces for the contemporary home.
All the items selected are made using indigenous hand-crafting techniques that have been harnessed and passed on from generation to generation – the art of etching stone, the emotive moulding of clay and the precise sculpting of common wood to create beauty.
The Weylandts World Cups collection includes:
Stone hurricane holders: These decorative holders from Vietnam feature intricate patterns etched into stone. They are available in a stone or a powder stone finish and are made in three sizes. The small retails at R165, the medium retails at R275 and the large retails at R375.
Burundi containers: The elongated shape of this container and the smooth and softly worn surface give it a sense of utilitarian dignity. Made in Burundi and carved with great skill from wood, these containers were used to carry food in traditional ceremonies. Available in two sizes with varying wood pigmentations, they now serve as sculptural artworks. The small retails at R895 and the medium retails at R1 295.
Dutz pillar holder: The Dutz pillar holder is part of the unparalleled Dutz glassware collection from the Ukraine. This clear glass holder is hand made and its curvaceous shape is achieved using the ancient technique of glass blowing. It retails at R395.
Topido vases: Hand crafted in Thailand, these tall white-washed vases are made from indigenous mango wood. An eye-catching spiral pattern is created by the contrast of the white wash with the burnt orange wood. Available in two sizes, the medium retails at R899 and the large retails at R1 299.
Botella Nilo: The Botella vases are made from 100% recycled glass. The glass is salvaged from the streets of Spain and reshaped to create rounded vases in deep brown with a choice of a clear copper or a metallic copper finish. The clear copper vase retails at R149 and the metallic copper vase retails at R229.
Zulu pots: Rimless and opaque, these impressive clay pots are created by women in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region of South Africa. They are decorated with the local tradition of adding raised warts and drawing incision lines into the clay to create fascinating patterns that tell a mysterious tale. These dark beauties are great conversation pieces. The small retails at R495, the medium retails at R1 195 and the large retails at R4 995.
